Titty art in the ground – the bronze breast

At the end of February 1993 this mysterious sculpture of a bronze breast was found in the pavement of the Oudekerksplein.

The piece of art appeared out of nothing. Around the same time other sculptures and statues appeared in Amsterdam like ‘the Man with violin case’ in the Marnixstraat, the ‘Zagertje’ in the Leidsebos and the ‘Violinist’ in the Town Hall / Music Theater.

Bronze breast art with hand

Removed

A week after it was found, Stedelijk Beheer had already removed it. ‘It was a great pity, it was such a nice hand’, said one of the City Councel Members.

There were complaints from one local resident who had incited the service to the cleaning action because she found it offensive… Let me mention again the sculpture is on Oudekerksplein, situated in the middle of the Amsterdam Red Light District.

Another complaint was about noise. Apparently someone clinked a stone against the bronze, which was heard through the old cellars beneath the square.

Nobody knows who made the bronze breast

The only people who are aware of who the artist is, are the city council members who asked him to come forward. If he didn’t, the art would be removed.

So he came forward and the local government promised to keep his (or her) secret. But there are some interesting theories:

  1. The Queen did it.
  2. A bored elite surgeon on his pension did it.
  3. Gene Holt (Artist) did it.

Whoever enriched ansterdam with these sculptures, let us be grateful. I walk past this bronze breat every day and it reminds me that sex can be a form of art. It is a remarkable human activity and let’s face it. Everybody does it. Paid or not.
